With summer now in full swing it goes without saying that our Lifeguards are under a lot of pressure to ensure the safety of all patrons at our pools. Watch Around Water has helped in educating parents/guardians regarding their responsibilities in supervising their children within arms reach or line sight. It is also up to Lifeguards and Supervisors to remain vigilant and respond to dangerous behavior in the aquatic environment at all times. One such behavior that has the potential to turn a fun day at the local pool into a disaster is shallow water blackout. Shallow water blackout is a loss of consciousness caused cerebral hypoxia towards the end of a breath hold dive in water typically shallower than five metres. A very serious incident at a local metropolitan pool over the Xmas period is a salient reminder for all aquatic staff to continue to educate patrons that this type of behavior is unsafe and should not be allowed at our pools. Don't let this happen at your pool this summer!
